You have heard of this words; "Sushi", "Tsunami", "Judo".
On the other hand, there are a lot of words came from outside Japan, especially English. In t article, I will introduce some words which are originally from English.

1.  English words used in modern Japanese!!

1. Food and drink
tuna→sea chiken(シーチキン)
Japanese people call tuna "sea chiken". The reason is that tuna and chicken are similar in nutrients. why japanese people call chiken " Land Tuna"!? that is mysterious!
pancake→hotcake(ホットケーキ)
I don’t know why japanese people call pancake "hotcake".
okra→okura(オクラ)
Okra entered Japan from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era, and it seems that it was in the 1970s that it spread nationwide. Before it spread nationwide, it was called 'American line' or 'line', but now it is unified as 'okra'. By the way, it is native to Northeast Africa.

Weak coffe→American coffee(アメリカンコーヒー)
After World War, Americans in Japan liked to drink lightly roasted coffee, Japanese people call weak coffee "American coffee".


2.occupation 
Office worke(man)→Salary man(サラリーマン)
This is a fairly pervasive word in Japan. Japanese people think "Salary man" as the man who work with suit.


Office worker(woman)→OL (office lady)
This is the same to man.
